A Sermon In Three Parts

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. May these words be more than words and give us all the spirit of Jesus. Amen.

“I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore trees, and the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

I want to know what that conversation was like. Amos is minding his own business and then the next thing he knows, he’s on a mission from God. How do these things happen? How do we know when God is calling us? How do we know what to say? Why prophesy?

Our two stories this morning give us a little insight to answering these questions.

My name is Tripp Hudgins. I live in Richmond, VA with my wife and son and our cats and a couple of hermit crabs. Thanks so much to Terri for inviting me to preach these next three Sundays. You can even think of this as part one of a three part sermon. . .Why prophesy?

Let’s dig in.

Amos was a shepherd and a guy with a tree trimming business.

That’s all. He wasn’t a court prophet. He wasn’t the son of a court prophet. He didn’t go to prophet camp as a kid. Amos is woefully unprepared for the work that he has been called to do. But nonetheless, we have this compelling and terrifying story of our unlikely hero…
